Organized Chaos.

Three weeks from now I'm hoping to be able to look back and say that these have been some of the most productive, hard working weeks of my life so far.

Among other projects I'm desperately trying to finish my manuscript.

I'm completely ready to be done writing about the worst year of our life.
Its emotionally exhausting reliving these memories over and over.
And I don't like how pathetic I was when G.I. Joe was in Iraq.

So...this is how I keep everything going.

This is my slightly organized chaos:

I have colors and codes for everything under the sun.

I keep reminders of how far I've come. That was what I used to motivate myself last summer to write my manuscript. In less than 6 weeks I actually wrote 3/4 of the book!

More motivation: wisdom from great writers and "It All Changed In an Instant," the first book I ever had my name and words published in.

This folder holds 8 finished chapters.

Yes, I am so much of a dork that I have a favorite, and lucky, pink editing pen.

I feel like I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
This is my final push to get these last 3 or 4 chapters cranked out.

If I'm worse than ever about returning blog comments, emails or messages over the next 3 weeks, its probably because I'm here. And I promise to resurface soon!

Do you all have any tips or methods of organization that help keep life a little less chaotic?

Yes. I keep a calendar similar to yours. I schedule everything down to working out and eating out. In law school you're told to schedule your free time, otherwise you might forget to take some.

Looks like you're making A LOT of progress. Can't wait to see the end result.

Oh wow. If I were that organized, I might be able to get a thing or two done!! I applaud your skills! And it's ok to have a favorite editing pen. =) I had a favorite grading pen when I was being all teacher-y. Oh, and I LOVE that you have a Mac. That makes me like you even more!! LOL!

I have a daily planner that fits into my purse and two seperate notebooks that I jot stuff into. If someone else looked at any of it, they would think I was a mess, but it's organized to me. Lol.

Go, girl, go! :) Kudos for some killer organization. Every manuscript I've ever worked on is only organized by having the random bits of paper the ideas began on shoved into a folder. lol.

PS -- I have a favorite pen too. But mine's purple. ;)

Good for you! I'm so impressed with how far you've come. I've thought of writing a book, but that's as far as I've gotten. :) Keep at it, girl! I'm sure it'll be great!

You're so organized and it's SO cute.

I LOVE pink pens too. I write everything in pink and purple ink and if I can't (for legal docs and such) I only use blue ink. I'm kind of a dork like that.

I think you have a great set up. I need to borrow some of your methods, lol.

Congrats again on the book. It's a great feeling to be a published writer. :)

Girl, screw commenting. You do what you need to do. :) And seriously, that whiteboard made my pulse race! I am about 2 steps away from buying a new, bigger whiteboard from Hobby Lobby this afternoon. Trying not to spend (extra) money, but new seeing yours....I may not be able to resist!

And please do not respond to this. :) No one's feelings will be hurt. You can do it!!

I am trying to finish the first 3 chapters of my dissertation and have them presented to my committee in 3 weeks! So I'm on a similar writing timeline.

But I can't schedule out that far in advance... I have to make a list every night of what I have to do the next day.

PS: Google Calendar rocks and you can color code that too!

I am a FIRM believer in color-coded calendars :) I have a giant desk calendar hanging on the wall in the kitchen all color-coded away :) It makes all those things on the to-do list a little more exciting... well maybe not exciting... but certainly more colorful! :)

I'm a very unorganized writer. But, I do use a calendar and notebook. Plus, I'm doing book signings now, so that is another activity to schedule in.

Haven't visited here in a long time, but I want you to know I have been keeping all of our service families in my (and our family's) prayers.

Keep plugging away, your book will get done and will bless a lot of people. wb

I keep a daily planner in my purse along with my wall calendar in the house. Oh and everything and I mean everything has its place. I know exactly where everything is. I have mini melt downs if something is not where it should be (it is seriously on an OCD level). I think it is awesome that you are writing a book and sharing your story!

I was a consultant for 10 years (biologist) and we had to track our hours spent for billing purposes. Whether it's Microsoft or Google Calendar, or just a Moleskin journal, I find keeping a daily journal is a good calibration of where you are spending your time as a writer, in addition to the long-term goal calendar. It helps to set more realistic goals in your planning.

You can do it Jacq!!! I think you've got a great schedule made out for yourself!

I make lists. To-Do lists. Dont Forget lists. Any kind of list you can think of. Right now I have a list of certain bills to pay on payday, because it slightly varies each month, as well as a list of shows to record while Im gone home for a week, a list of what needs to get packed for baby and me, and a list of things that need to get done before I leave Daddy Devil Dog all alone for a week!! It really helps to see it all written out, and feels good when I can cross things off the list!

I love your office. Super cute, and amazingly organized! That calendar reminds me of how I used to organize my life in college. I had color codes for every class, and it helped me remember when papers were due and when big exams were. Sometimes I think I need to go back to that system.

Oh girl! We are too alike!

My planner looks exactly like your board. Color coded and times planned out for everything. Blogging, social networking, home business, appointments, freelance tutoring, financial planning, kids, gymnastics, etc, etc. All neatly sectioned off, highlighted in different colors, and planned out!

So all your readers will get an autographed copy right?? ha :) That is so exciting -- good luck!!!
